Sir Nigel John Dermot "Sam" Neill was born on September 14, 1947, in Omagh, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. He was the son of Priscilla Beatrice Neill and Dermot Neill. His father, an army officer, was originally from New Zealand, while his mother was English. In 1954, the Neill family moved to Christchurch, New Zealand. Sam Neill attended Cashmere Primary School and then Medbury School before the family relocated to Dunedin. There, he went to Christ's College in Christchurch. Sam later studied at the University of Canterbury, initially uncertain about his career path.

Sam Neill's acting career began in 1970. He gained early recognition with his role in the film "Sleeping Dogs" (1977). He followed this with leading roles in notable films such as "My Brilliant Career" (1979), "Omen III: The Final Conflict" (1981), and "Possession" (1981). Sam Neill was married to Noriko Watanabe from 1989 until their separation in 2017. They have one daughter together, and Neill also adopted Watanabe's daughter from a previous marriage. In addition to his family with Watanabe, Neill fathered a son in his early twenties, who was placed for adoption but reunited with him in 1994. Neill currently resides in Alexandra, New Zealand, where he owns a vineyard named Two Paddocks. Despite its challenges, Neill finds running the vineyard fulfilling.
