Nesthy Alcayde Petecio was born on April 11, 1992, in Santa Cruz, Davao del Sur, Philippines. She was raised in a poor farming family. Representing the Philippines, Nesthy Petecio competed in various international boxing events. She won silver medals at the 2014 AIBA Women’s World Championships and at the Southeast Asian Games in 2011 and 2013. She also claimed a bronze medal at the 2012 Asian Championships and a gold medal at the 2015 Indonesia President’s Cup. However, she faced setbacks in other competitions, including the 2014 Asian Games and the 2015 and 2017 Asian Championships, where she did not secure a podium finish. In the women’s featherweight division, she won her first fight against Marcelat Sakobi Matshu of the Democratic Republic of Congo with a score of 5:0. She then defeated Lin Yu-ting of Chinese Taipei 3:2 and Yeni Arias of Columbia 5:0 to secure at least a bronze medal. She made history by becoming the first Filipino woman to win an Olympic boxing medal. In the semifinals, she beat Irma Testa of Italy 4:1 to advance to the gold medal bout. Nesthy Petecio faced Sena Irie in the final and lost by unanimous decision, earning a silver medal. This was the first Olympic boxing medal for the Philippines in 25 years.
