Early Life and Education
Jessica Hull was born on October 22, 1996, in Albion Park, New South Wales, Australia. Growing up in Albion Park, Jessica Hull developed an interest in running at a young age, participating in school cross-country and athletics events from the age of eight. In addition to running, she played soccer until she was 14. Her father, Simon Hull, who was a national-level middle-distance runner, initially guided her training.
Jessica Hull early athletic achievements include winning the under-17 1500 meters at the 2012 Australian Athletics Championships with a time of 4:28.11. At 17, she made her international debut at the 2014 World U20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon, where she finished seventh in the 3000 meters with a personal best time of 9:08.85. Jessica Hull also won the 1500 meters at the 2015 Australian Junior Championships and placed third in the 800 meters. That year, she competed in the World Cross Country Championships, finishing 69th in the women's junior race.
College Career
After high school, Jessica Hull moved to the United States to attend the University of Oregon, where she completed a degree in human physiology. At Oregon, she competed as a member of the Oregon Ducks and was coached by Maurica Powell and Helen Lehman-Winters. Jessica Hull achieved significant success during her college career, becoming the NCAA Division I indoor 3000 meters bronze medallist in 2018. Over the next two years, she added six podium finishes in indoor and outdoor track events and cross-country, including four collegiate titles. She won the NCAA individual championships in the 1500 meters in 2018 and the indoor 3000 meters in 2019, earning seven All-American honors.
Professional Career
Jessica Hull turned professional in June 2019 when she signed with Nike and joined the Nike Oregon Project. Her senior international debut came at the 2019 World Athletics Championships in Doha, Qatar, where she narrowly missed the 1500 meters final, recording the fastest non-qualifying time ever. In January 2020, Jessica Hull set an Oceanian indoor 1500 meters record at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix in Boston with a time of 4:04.14. Later that year, she broke the 18-year-old Australian national 5000 meters record at the Monaco Diamond League, finishing fourth with a time of 14:43.80.
Jessica Hull performance at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics was notable; she reached the final of the 1500 meters, achieving an Oceanian record time of 3:58.81 to secure a spot in the final. She finished 11th in the final with a time of 4:02.63. In February 2023, Jessica Hull competed in the mixed relay at the World Athletics Cross Country Championships in Australia, helping her team win a bronze medal.
In July 2023, Jessica Hull set a new Australian and Oceanian women's mile record with a time of 4:15.34, which was the eighth-fastest time ever in the women's mile. On July 7, 2024, she improved her own Oceanian record in the 1500 meters to 3:50.83 at the Meeting de Paris, ranking her 5th on the all-time top list. Five days later, on July 12, 2024, at the Herculis Meeting in Monaco, Jessica Hull set a world record in the 2000 meters with a time of 5:19.70, surpassing the previous record held by Burundi's Francine Niyonsaba.
