Are you establishing your career as a scientist and looking for the best possible foundation for innovative epidemiological modeling and genomic investigations, focusing on gastrointestinal infections, antimicrobial resistance, and potential emerging diseases?

At DTU's Research Group for Genomic Epidemiology, you will contribute to a dynamic team aiming to build international capacities for managing health threats effectively. You will work on the European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP) 3 supported project, which is entitled - Linking Infectious Disease Front-liners' Control Efforts with Central Public Health Authorities in the African Great Lakes Region (GREAT-LIFE).

The project aims at providing front-line disease diagnostic and evidence for decision-making using genomics. As a Strategic Alliance PhD, you will work closely with local project partners and a PhD student at the University of Nairobi. The Strategic Alliance PhD is funded for a PhD at DTU to work closely with another PhD in one of the eight DTU's strategic partnership Universities around the world.

You will work closely with the University of Nairobi PhD towards the integration of microbial genomic and epidemiological data into joint modeling and visualization frameworks which will result in joint publications, reports and policy briefs.


Responsibilities And Qualifications

Your overall focus will be implementing innovative epidemiological modeling with datasets from microbial genomic investigations, focusing on gastrointestinal infections, antimicrobial resistance, and potential emerging diseases. You will contribute to a dynamic team aiming to engage epidemiologists directly with frontline diagnosticians and bioinformaticians through the creation of infrastructures for combining and mining the vast and rapidly expanding public epidemiological and genomic data. In addition, you will directly ensure that the analyses conducted are of public health relevance by continuously engaging with the public health authorities.


Responsibilities

Development of pipelines for real-time analysis of genomic data to characterize pathogens and antimicrobial resistance patterns.

Collation of epidemiological datasets from multiple sources in close collaboration with healthcare professionals, government officials, and community stakeholders in the African Great Lakes Region.

Develop models to predict the spread of infections and evaluate potential drivers of public health importance.

Integrate microbial genomic with epidemiological datasets into pipelines for real-time data analysis and visualization.

Participate in capacity-building activities to build epidemiological modeling and visualization skills in the Great Lakes Region.

• Contribute to the dissemination of research findings through publications, presentations at national and international conferences and policy briefs.


Qualifications

You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two- year master's degree.

• Master's degree in infectious disease modeling, epidemiology, public health, or a closely related field.

Experience in field epidemiology, data collection, management, and statistical analysis.

Proficiency in statistical software (e.g., R, GIS, Python) and data visualization tools

Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary and multicultural teams.

• Bioinformatics skills for whole genome sequence data are highly desirable.

• Willingness to spend substantial periods within the African Great Lakes Region and engage in fieldwork across various locations.

The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. Salary And Appointment Terms

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
