Contacting a professor is one of the CORE requirements in getting funded for research in Canada, UK, Europe, Australia… and in many US universities.
Many people send emails and don’t get good responses.
Here is my 5-step process on how to email a Professor:
1) Use appropriate Email Subject. The subject of an email is what the Professor reads first, so, it has to be direct and clear. Don’t send emails without subject. It is a sin.
Most professors are flooded with lots of emails. For them to open and give you attention, your subject has to be clear, concise and grabs attention. Be specific.
Example: “Prospective Research Assistant, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Fall 2024.”
2) Be clear about the purpose of the email. Professors appreciate brevity and directness. State your request early and do not beat around the bush.
Example: “I am writing to express my interest in working with your lab on…”
3) You need to connect with the professor. Show evidence that you know what the professor is doing or had done. Read their publications or articles to understand them. Mention a mutual interest or their recent publication of you found insightful.
Example: “I read your recent paper that highlighted the role of phosphorus in extraterrestrial life investigations, and I was inspired by your…”
4) Introduce yourself simply. Write your full name and briefly highlight your background and present position.
Example: “I am Charlie Nwamgbafor, I hold PhD in Internet Evangelism from Facebook University. I currently work at…”
5) Make a request. This is usually the last paragraph. End your email with a clear action point. Propose a meeting, or ask for specific advice.
Example: “I would like to know available opportunities in your lab and discuss my interest with you…”

The way you approach emails can change everything. Open your Google, search for professors, get their email addresses and start sending them emails.
Send at least, 300 emails before September. Go hard!
