3 Major Steps To Studying in the USA For Nigerian Students

1) Preparation: You need to prepare your documents. Get your transcript. Have your degree certificate/statement of result ready. 'International' Passport is necessary.

Reach out to your professors/lecturers, your manager (if you're working), and request that they become your referees. Without their letters of recommendation, you can hardly gain admission.

If you have low CGPA or HND, then you need to look for schools that can accept your qualification (I shared lists of schools that accept HND. Please check my timeline).

You may need to evaluate your transcripts. Check if you need to sit for GRE/GMAT or English Language Test. Gather all necessary documents.

Then, you're almost ready for application stage.

NB: You don’t have to get everything ready before you start application.

2) Application: If you're interested in funding/scholarship, you should target Fall (August/September) admission. Fall is the major admission season. You may be lucky for Spring and Summer, but Fall is preferable.

By now, you should have selected the schools you want to apply to. You know their basic requirements, application fee, cost of attendance, admission protocol and such.

Then you will write essays: Personal Statement, Motivation Letter, and/or Statement of Purpose. You should have an academic CV (it's different from work CV).

3) Visa Interview: Universities do NOT give visa. They only give admission and offer you I-20.  Your fate will be determined by the consular during visa interview.

Your profile, documents and how best you represent your story will determine approval. Present your case and be ready to demonstrate your desire to study in the US. If you've gotten to this level, and you arranged your documents well, then you should be fine.

NOTE: I do NOT give admission. I can NOT get your visa approved. Only the school can give you admission, only the embassy can provide you visa.
