The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has recently made a significant announcement that will impact prospective students seeking admission into tertiary institutions in Nigeria. The much-anticipated conversion of Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) scores to Direct Entry (DE) has been officially initiated, opening up new opportunities for candidates aspiring to pursue higher education through alternative routes.
What Is UTME and Direct Entry
The Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) is an annual standardized examination conducted by JAMB for candidates seeking admission into Nigerian universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education. It serves as the primary gateway for undergraduate admissions into these institutions.
On the other hand, Direct Entry (DE) is an alternative admission route for candidates who already possess a National Diploma (ND) or Higher National Diploma (HND) from recognized institutions or who have completed an A’ Level program. DE candidates are eligible for direct admission into the second or third year of their chosen course, bypassing the UTME process.
The Conversion Process
JAMB’s recent announcement brings good news to those who have already taken the UTME and are now considering the Direct Entry option. The conversion process allows UTME candidates who meet the specified criteria to convert their UTME scores to DE qualifications, thus enabling them to apply for admission directly into the higher levels of their chosen courses.
To be eligible for the conversion, candidates must have obtained a minimum score in the UTME, which will vary based on the institutions and courses they wish to apply for. Additionally, they must meet the specific requirements set by the institutions they intend to apply to through the Direct Entry route.
Benefits of UTME to DE Conversion
The introduction of the UTME to DE conversion offers several advantages to prospective students:
1. Flexibility in Admissions: The conversion provides candidates with an alternative path to higher education, giving them more options to pursue their desired courses and institutions.
2. Time and Cost Efficiency: For candidates who have already taken the UTME, the conversion process saves them from the need to retake the examination. This not only saves time but also reduces the financial burden associated with registering for another exam.
3. Faster Progression: Successful candidates can enter directly into the second or third year of their chosen programs, allowing them to fast-track their academic journey and potentially save a year or more in their studies.
4. Broadened Opportunities: Direct Entry admissions open up opportunities for candidates who possess specialized qualifications, such as National Diplomas or A’ Level certifications, to continue their education at higher levels.
How to Convert UTME to DE in 2024
The board has not allowed any cyber cafes to carry out this service rather than only state jamb office.
Any candidates who want to convert his/her UTME result to DE should go to any nearby state Jamb office in the country, candidates must come along with the following documents:
- UTME Result
- O Level Result
This is also to call the attention of candidates who wants to convert from UTME to DE that this conversion is free. However that it is done only at state jamb offices nationwide.
