Reintegrating adolescent mothers into school Initiatives
Background
Teenage pregnancy is one of the leading causes of school drop out among Adolescents girls in Nigeria. According to the National Demographic Health Survey (2018), 1 in 5 girls between the ages of 15-19years have begun child bearing. When girls become pregnant they are forced to drop out of school without skill acquisition options or plans for their reintegration into schools after delivery.
Studies have shown that children born to uneducated mothers are twice less likely to go to school and more likely to die from vaccine preventable deaths.
Reintegrating adolescent mothers into school would significantly reduce the number of out-of-school children in Nigeria, particularly in Nasarawa state where out-of-school children currently account for about 15% of its general population.
Teenage Network in partnership with @RiseUpforGirls is collaborating with the Nasarawa state ministry of education to establish a school re-entry guideline for not in education, employment or training (NEET) adolescent mothers.
Teenage Network is a feminist-led nonprofit organization that facilitates access to quality education and healthcare for adolescents girls. We are a member of the Global Feminist Coalition for Gender Transformative Education hosted by the United Nations Girls' Education (UNGEI).
Role Description
This is a contract hybrid role as a Gender Specialist at Teenage Network. The Gender Specialist will work in the Lafia office but some remote work is acceptable. They will be responsible for collaborating with program staff and the Nasarawa state ministry of education to design a context specific school re-entry guideline for adolescent mothers in the state.
Deliverables:
• Participate in a one-day stakeholders dialogue to gather inputs for the framework
• Develop draft guideline
• Participate in a day validation workshop for the draft guideline
• Review the guidelines to reflect feedback from stakeholders
• Produce final copy of the school re-entry guideline
Qualifications
- Ability to design a context specific school re-entry guideline for adolescent mothers
- Knowledge of adolescent and gender issues such as gender-based violence, girl child education, and health
- Excellent communication and report writing skills
- Ability to work in a multicultural environment and in partnership with others
- Master's degree in gender studies or other relevant fields.
- More than 5years experience working on adolescents issues, gender programs, or education in a development context.
- Knowledge of Nasarawa socio-cultural settings is an added advantage.
