How To Cope With Difficult Words In English Language Examinations?

When you are faced with difficult words in English language during your WASSCE or JAMB examinations, you don't need to panic. Do not be worried when you see a word that you don't know. It is quite possible to understand most of a text without understanding every single word. If you don't understand a word, don't spend a long time wondering what it means: read on; very often its meaning will become clear - or unimportant. 

If you are writing a summary or a paraphrase, think about the writer's overall meaning. The difficult words will quite often not be essential to understanding the writer's overall meaning.

You can practice surveying by following these simple guide:

The quick read. This is to get a clearer overview. If necessary, omit parts that seem difficult and come back to them later.

The slow read. This is the study stage proper; but many students make that mistake of starting with it, or of omitting all others! Make notes either during this stage or after it, but not before you have done you survey and quick read.
