How To Answer English Language Examination Questions In SSCE, WASSCE or JAMB

In the WASSCE or SSCE for example, questions are open-ended. This means that you have to think of the answers yourself; if you are not given a set of answers to choose from.

Some questions can come in comprehension, vocabulary questions, grammar, and questions on figures of speech.

Make sure that you understand the questions very well before answering. No matter how well you understand the text, if you misunderstand the questions and fail to answer it, you will not score any marks.

In terms of comprehension questions, you can think up suitable answers - of course, based on the text. Also, you can use your own words as far as possible; don't just 'lift' words from text. And remember, your answers must be given in complete sentences in correct English.

However for vocabulary questions,  usually this type of questions requires you to provide words similar in meaning to those used in the text. These words must fit into the context. This is much different from grammar questions, which requires you to identify grammatical elements in the text, and to be able to start the job or function they have in the context. For me, lol this is one of the hardest part in English language. But during answering grammar questions, just make sure the job or function answers to the text are defined in two parts seperately.

Lastly in this article, we are in the questions on figures of speech. This part of English language is more like understanding. You just have to identify common figures of speech, and their meaning in the context.
